Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that affects a small percentage of the population and is characterised by excessive sweating. There are two main types of hyperhidrosis – primary and secondary hyperhidrosis
Secondary Hyperhidrosis
This form of excessive sweating occurs in a much more general fashion and is the side effect of some other condition, disease or illness.
Examples of conditions that can cause secondary hyperhidrosis include:
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Weight Problems
- Endocrine Disorders
Treating secondary hyperhidrosis will focus on treating the condition that is at the heart of the problem.
Primary Hyperhidrosis
As a general rule primary hyperhidrosis will cause excessive sweating fromĀ a specific part of the body. The most commn areas to be affected include the hands, the feets, the armpits and the head.
The exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis is not yet known, but what is currently understood is that excessive sweating is related to either the sympathetic nervous system or the sweat glands. This excess sweat is being caused for one of two possible reasons
- The nerves are sending the wrong signals to the sweat glands and asking them to produce sweat when there is no sweat required.
- The sweat glands are malfunctioning and are not regulating the amount of sweat that is being released.
